My day

Uggg, I don't know what's wrong with me today. It's like I'm going through the motions of the day but it feels like my feet are stuck in the mud with every step that I take. I was up at 5:30 this morning for a toning workout. It kinda helps losen me up for the day. I didn't weigh in so I can't say if the scale went up ... down ... or even stayed the same. My DS was a little disappointed that his weight stayed the same. I told him to think of it like this ... it's better to stay the same then to have a gain. I told him if he wanted to lose then he was gonna have to move his but out of his video chair & exercise. We bought the kids bikes for Christmas cause they said their old ones were to small but I swear ... they NEVER ride the darn things. Oh well, maybe when it gets cooler we can start our family walks back up. It was a lot of fun.

Comments on my day:

Not as great as it was last week ... I'm starting to see the dread in seeing fruit or veggies. I don't know how to spice it up so it doesn't get old & boring.

Dance Off the Inches: Tummy Tone Party Zone!
Video of the Day
My over the weekend find ... the reason my abs feel like their on fire ... Dance off the ingche, Tummy Tone, Party Zone. All I can say about this baby is OMFG ... from the warm up moves ... dancing, and ending abs routine my abs were worked so much that I almost couldn't make it through the floor workout. I counted the crunches ... 180!!! I haven't done that many sit-ups/crunches in gosh, I don't even know how long.

I purchased this video at Walmart for under $10 & I already know it was a great choice. The only thing I don;t like about it is in the second routine I can't seem to remember the steps. It almost feels like the instructor hasn't gone over the steps enough. I'm sure after I have done it a couple of times this won't be a factor but for someone who usually catches on right away it sucked to know I couldn't catch the steps after the first run through. What I love about this video ... the Salsa routines & the floor work for abs. I love feeling the work ... lets me know that I'm not doing crunches for nothing. Now ... ask me tomorrow if I still love the floor work. I'm sure based on the way I'm feeling now that I will have a hard time breathing tomorrow.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF DANCING

If you secretly sashay across your living room when you're home alone or long to cha-cha with your significant other, you're in luck. Not only is dancing an exceptional way to let loose and have fun, but it also provides some terrific benefits for your health.

In fact, Mayo Clinic researchers reported that social dancing helps to:

  • Reduce stress
  • Increase energy
  • Improve strength
  • Increase muscle tone and coordination

And whether you like to kick up your heals to hip hop, classical or country, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) says that dancing can:

  • Lower your risk of coronary heart disease
  • Decrease blood pressure
  • Help you manage your weight
  • Strengthen the bones of your legs and hips

Dancing is a unique form of exercise because it provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing you to engage in a social activity. This is especially stimulating to the mind, and one 21-year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine even found dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in the elderly.

In the study, participants over the age of 75 who engaged in reading, dancing and playing musical instruments and board games once a week had a 7 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those who did not. Those who engaged in these activities at least 11 days a month had a 63 percent lower risk!

Interestingly, dancing was the only physical activity out of 11 in the study that was associated with a lower risk of dementia. Said Joe Verghese, a neurologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a lead researcher of the study, "This is perhaps because dance music engages the dancer's mind."

Verghese says dancing may be a triple benefit for the brain. Not only does the physical aspect of dancing increase blood flow to the brain, but also the social aspect of the activity leads to less stress, depression and loneliness. Further, dancing requires memorizing steps and working with a partner, both of which provide mental challenges that are crucial for brain health.

How Good of a Workout is Dancing, Really?

The amount of benefit you get from dancing depends on, like most exercises, the type of dancing you're doing, how strenuous it is, the duration and your skill level.

Says exercise physiologist Catherine Cram, MS, of Comprehensive Fitness Consulting in Middleton, Wisconsin, "Once someone gets to the point where they're getting their heart rate up, they're actually getting a terrific workout. Dance is a weight-bearing activity, which builds bones. It's also "wonderful" for your upper body and strength."

Plus, dancing requires using muscles that you may not even know you had.

"If you're dancing the foxtrot, you're taking long, sweeping steps backwards. That's very different than walking forward on a treadmill or taking a jog around the neighborhood ... Ballroom dancing works the backs of the thighs and buttock muscles differently from many other types of exercise," says Ken Richards, professional dancer and spokesman for USA Dance, the national governing body of DanceSport (competitive ballroom dancing).

Specific Benefits of Different Dances

If you're looking for specific health results, here's a breakdown of the benefits of some popular dances. Just remember that any type of dancing is better than no dancing at all!

Belly Dancing

  • Improved posture and muscle toning
  • Maintains flexibility
  • Helps prevent lower back problems
  • Tones and firms arms and shoulders
  • Helps with weight loss
  • Helps prepare women for childbirth
  • Reduces stress

Dancing Off Those Calories

How many calories will you burn while dancing? That depends on the type ofdancing. Here's a range of some of the most popular varieties, based on a 150-pound person, per hour:

  • Swing dancing: 235 calories/hour
  • Ballroom dancing: 265
  • Square dancing: 280
  • Ballet: 300
  • Belly dancing: 380
  • Salsa dancing: 420+
  • Aerobic dancing: 540+

Ballroom Dancing

  • Conditions the body
  • Helps keep the heart in shape
  • Builds and increases stamina
  • Develops the circulatory system
  • Strengthens and tones legs and body
  • Increases flexibility and balance
  • Helps with weight loss
  • Relieves stress

Salsa Dancing

  • Builds endurance and stamina
  • Helps with weight loss
  • Relieves stress
  • Helps you release toxins via sweating
  • May help lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels
  • Can lead to a reduced heart rate over time

Square Dancing

  • Provides cardiovascular conditioning
  • May lead to a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure and an improved cholesterol profile
  • Strengthens bones
  • Helps you develop strong social ties
  • Loosens and tones muscles

Physical benefits aside, dancing has a way of brightening up a person's day, says ballroom owner and operator Karen Tebeau.

"A lot of times, when people come into the studio, it's because there's been a change in their life: a divorce or they've been through a period of depression. They (continue) coming in, and you see a big change. After a while, they're walking in with a sunny expression. You know it's the dancing that's doing that," she says.

Last week it was 45.7% ... yikes, I can't believe it's that much ... this morning, although it's a bit hard to read is 42.1%. That's a big drop for just 1 week of cardio.

The weekend was very nice & laid back ... I need every day to be like this weekend, I would be so much more happy. Oh well, if you didn't have bad days you wouldn't be glad to have good ones right?

I know, I'm under the calories I should be taking in. For some reason I'm just not in to food today. Maybe later tonight I'll add some more fruit or something so I can get my calories into my range. I know I need to, I did a lot of dancing today. Not much of anything else. =)

Dance Off The Inches - Fat Burning Jam DVD Cover Art

You can have fun & burn calories all at the same time. For my weight I burned 230 calories in 35 min. Curious how many you'll burn? Check out Fitness Calorie Calculator

I found this little gem ( also another that I'll share tomorrow) at Walmart yesterday. What caught my eye while walking past all the workout videos was it's claim that the workout only had 10 steps to learn. Yea baby ... a no brainer workout! Oh well of course the price caught my eye too. I paid $9.45 for it & it's well worth it. Well, that is if you like to dance like I do. The instructor breaks each step down then adds them all together. I find this is the easiest way to learn the steps quickly so I'm glad that the team of Dance off the Inches is sticking to this style.

Since I was talking about how much body fat I have on my body it occured to me that there are probably others out there who don't know what a healthy range is so here's what I found;

Body Fat Charts

The percentage of body fat you have affects not only your weight and shape, but also affects your health.

Q. How much body fat is too much, or even too little?

A. That depends on two important factors, whether you are a man or a woman, and how old you are.

Below are four body fat charts that show body fat ranges for the whole family. There is a body fat chart for men aged 7-18, men aged 18-79, women aged 7-18 and women aged 18-79.

Male 7-18

Male 18-79

Female 7-18

Female 18-79

When comparing a body fat chart for men to a body fat chart for women you can see that women steadily increase their percentage body fat as they go through life, staying within a healthy fat range. Whereas male body fat percentage fluctuates during puberty before following the same adult pattern in body fat increments seen in the body fat chart for women.

And throughout life from adulthood women can have a body fat percentage 10% higher than a man of the same age who is of a healthy body fat range and still be in their healthy body fat range.

Meal planning

OMG, yesterday was so much fun ... I stayed on my diet with no probem. This is a BIG DEAL for me since I usually fall off the diet train Friday night & don't seem to be able to grab hold again until Monday morning. Of course by then it's to late to take back my choices & the damn scale is laughing his skinny little ars off at me once again. HA HA HA, not this time.

We decided to take the kids to Florida ... Panama City to be exact. Gulf world for some entertainment from sea animals & then to the beach to be entertained my our children.

Meal Planning Benifits

Meal planning can help you to successfully organize the daily routine of preparing meals for your family.

If you often find yourself searching for something to prepare for dinner, meal planning may be just the thing you need to make meal time less stressful.

Below are some of the benefits of meal planning.

1. You'll save time. Knowing what you're going to cook for dinner means you can get the meal on the table faster because you won't have to decide what to make.

In addition, when you plot out what meals you're going to fix for the week, you can simply make one trip to the store and buy allthe food you'll need for those meals.

You won't have to search the refrigerator or freezer when dinner time arrives, and you can eliminate trips to the grocery store looking for something to eat that everyone likes.

2. You'll save money. Meal planning can also help you save money.

For one, when you know what you're going to cook for dinner, you won't eat out as much during the week because you can't think of anything appealing to make.

By simply eating at home more instead of eating out, you'll keep more money in your pocket that you can use for other important things.

3. You'll be able to eat healthier. If you tend to eat burgers and fries from fast food places a few times a week, meal planning can help you to eat healthier by replacing those meals with healthier ones.

Instead of greasy, fatty hamburgers or having pizza delivered, you could have a nutritious meal of vegetables, salad and a lean main course of chicken or beef for dinner.

In addition, if you need to restrict sugar or salt from your diet, menu planning can help you to consistently cook meals that fit your nutritional standards and stick to your diet.

4. You'll be able to reduce meal time stress. If you have your dinners planned out, you won't have to figure out what to make while everyone is hungry and in bad moods.

You'll already know what you're going to make, and dinner time can go smoothly as everyone looks forward to the delicious meal they're going to eat.

5. Meal planning is easy. Planning what you're going to prepare for dinner over the weekdays isn't difficult.

It just takes a little time to decide beforehand what you want to eat, andthen purchase the food.

You can plan your dinners for the week days, the entire week or longer.

However, start small by planning out, for example, five dinners for the weekdays.

Once you see what's involved, you'll have a better idea how many meals and how far ahead you'd like to plan.

Conclusion: Meal planning can help you to save money and time. Meal planning can also help you to eat healthier, reduce meal time stress, and isn't difficult to do.

After you start meal planning, you may find that dinner time becomes family time again.
